Ok, so it’s a test / clever ploy to get some extra brainpower.

So, I need to make a list of through-the-road hybrids - hybrids that drive some wheels with a traditional ICE (plus maybe an electric motor) and the others only with electric motors.

Kinja'd!!!

This 918 is an EXCELLENT example!

Anything goes, from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to the LaFerrari 918. [EDIT: It’s been pointed out I was a bit hasty including the LaFerrari, which is actually RWD. Eh, nobody’s perfect! And thanks for the correction!]

I’d also like to capture rumored upcoming vehicles, like the mid-engine Corvette.

I have a partial list already, but I’m trying to make sure I cover all my bases.

Ready, Oppo?

GO!

BMW i8 uses the electric motor for the front wheels.

Lexus RX 400h has a full electric rear drive

Volvo XC90 also has a full electric rear drive

LMP1 racecars

918 is a TTR hybrid at speeds below 155 mph. Above that its RWD ICE only.

i8 is a TTR hybrid at all speeds

Those are the only TTR hybrids I know of.

Laferrari is not a TTR hybrid, its front wheels are unpowered

That, FWIW, isn’t the definition I’ve heard used (except in one other place) for “through the road” hybrid. (A through the road hybrid, from what I’ve seen, has solely internal combustion on one axle, and solely electric on the other axle.)

However, for vehicles with at least one solely electrified axle, and at least one mechanically ICE-driven axle, and energy storage (which rules out the Nissan e-4WD systems, that have a generator on the ICE, but no energy storage, it all goes straight to the rear axle)...

I’m also going to limit this to production cars, as I ain’t going to go look up everything rumored.

Front-drive ICE, rear-drive electric

Power split devices (ICE goes through a eCVT with two electric motors and planetary gearing between the three motors) - some of these, AWD is optional

Toyota Alphard/Vellfire Hybrid

Toyota Estima Hybrid

Toyota Harrier/Lexus RX 400h

Toyota Harrier XU60 Hybrid (previous gens were what the RX 400h was based on, but the XU60 is its own RAV4-derivative)

Toyota Kluger/Highlander Hybrid

Lexus NX 300h

Toyota Prius (yes, it has an e-Four option)

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Pure through-the-road (ICE only on front axle, electric only on rear axle) - all of these are diesel, too

Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4

Peugeot 508 RXH and HYbrid4

Citroën DS5 HYbrid4

Rear-drive ICE, front-drive electric

Porsche 918 (uses a motor in between engine and transmission, and two motors up front)

I’m probably missing something here, but I think that’s it. The LaFerrari is RWD-only.

Excellent list -thank you!

I understand the pure definition, but in practice the distinction isn’t as important for me (at least for what I’m doing with it). The extra electric assist on the ICE-driven wheels is purely for performance, and I’m actually interested in more of the normal cars doing this - which you had an excellent list of.

I plan on looking up what I can as well, but your list will give me time to focus more on the future / rumored stuff, which is a bit harder to sift through.

I mean, if I can keep encouraging you to neglect work, that would be great, too!

I should also mention the comment about the Nissan system was helpful as well - this helps substantially also.

Thank you so much!

Grr, I wish Kinja would let me edit posts indefinitely. I missed a few cars.

FWD ICE, RWD Electric:

Motor in between ICE and gearbox:

BMW 225xe Active Tourer (heavily rear-biased on its electric delivery though, but seems it has a small amount of electric assist on the front)

Volvo XC90 T8 (also heavily rear-biased)

Volvo S90 T8 (ditto)

Pure through-the-road:

Volvo V60 D5/D6 Twin Engine (I think - there’s a 7 kW generator on the ICE, but it doesn’t seem to be used for anything other than engine starting and for generation)

Serial hybrid with clutch for a parallel mode:

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

RWD ICE, FWD Electric:

Acura/Honda NSX (Can’t believe I forgot this one)

I think you listed every single one in the market between your two posts. I spent some time last night digging for others (and future planned vehicles) and I think you caught everything currently in production.

Well done!

You get a star AND a follow!

And thanks!
